What is a shoe outsole?

Outsole

The outsole is the bottom layer of a shoe that contacts the ground. It provides traction, abrasion resistance and protection, and is made from rubber, TPR, EVA, PU or TPU depending on use — grip and durability are its main jobs.

The outsole is engineered for the shoe’s purpose: deep lugs and hard rubber for hiking, non-marking compounds for court sports, light EVA for casual wear.

Material and tread are chosen to balance traction, abrasion resistance, weight and cost.

DOING develops custom outsole tooling and tests DIN abrasion, hardness and bond strength against the approved sample.
