What is phylon (MD) in footwear?
Phylon (MD)
Phylon, also called MD, is compression-moulded EVA: EVA pellets are foamed, moulded and heat-compressed into a light, resilient midsole. It is springier and cleaner-finished than plain EVA, which is why it is standard in running and sports midsoles.
Phylon is made by foaming EVA, then compression-moulding it to a finished shape. The process yields a lighter, more rebound-rich and better-finished midsole than die-cut EVA.
It is the workhorse midsole for athletic footwear — light, responsive and easy to shape into complex geometries. Like all EVA-based foams its compression set must be controlled.
DOING tunes phylon density and geometry for running and court lines and tests rebound and compression set so the ride stays consistent.
