Footwear Manufacturing Guides by Product Type

In-depth guides to how each footwear type is manufactured in China — boots, running, sandals, hiking, safety and semi-finished — construction, materials, MOQ.

Footwear is not one product — it is dozens, each made a different way. The manufacturer, construction, tooling and materials that suit a moulded EVA sandal are wrong for a waterproof hiking boot or a carbon-plate racer. These guides explain how each type of footwear is manufactured in China, written from inside a working factory, so you can brief a supplier properly and get the product you designed.

DOING has manufactured footwear since 2002, runs 4 production lines and a team of 589, produces 200,000+ pairs a month from its own factory plus a vetted partner-factory network, and holds amfori BSCI and HBI (Hanesbrands) audit reports. Pick the guide for your product below.

Boots

Boots are the most construction-heavy category — cementing, direct-injection, Goodyear welt and vulcanised are all different lines. Our boot manufacturing guide covers ankle, Chelsea, desert, rain, snow, winter, work and military boots, with construction methods and materials. Ready to develop? See the boot manufacturing service.

Sneakers

Sneakers span vulcanized canvas, cupsole, chunky and knit — each a different construction and line. Our sneaker manufacturing guide covers cupsole, vulcanized, strobel and injection builds, uppers and materials. See the sneaker manufacturing service.

Running & sports shoes

Performance running is decided by the midsole system — foam, geometry and, for racers, a plate. Our running shoe manufacturing guide covers road, trail, lightweight and carbon-plate racers, including foams and construction. See the running-shoe manufacturing service.

Sandals, slides & slippers

Sandals live and die on tooling and footbed development. Our sandal manufacturing guide covers slides, sport, comfort-footbed, women’s, kids’ and EVA sandals — including why moulded EVA needs a mould. See the sandal and slipper manufacturing services.

Hiking & outdoor boots

Outdoor boots are judged on the trail — waterproofing, grip and support all have to work together. Our hiking & outdoor boot guide covers membranes, lug outsoles, shanks and rock plates. See the hiking-shoe manufacturing service.

Safety & work boots

Safety footwear is a compliance product — certified toe caps, anti-penetration protection and tested outsoles. Our safety & work boot guide covers EN ISO 20345, steel vs composite toe caps and construction. See the safety-shoe and military & tactical services.

Military & tactical boots

Military and tactical boots are specification products — leather grade, construction and outsole are fixed by a standard or contract. Our military & tactical boot guide covers combat, tactical, jungle, desert and cold-weather boots, GOST/spec leather and durable outsoles. See the military & tactical boot service.

Semi-finished footwear & components

Some buyers want the hard-to-make parts and assemble locally. Our semi-finished footwear guide covers sourcing uppers, outsoles, midsoles and component kits for local assembly. See the shoe components service.

Frequently asked questions

Which types of footwear does DOING manufacture?

DOING manufactures boots, running shoes, sandals and slides, hiking and outdoor boots, safety and work boots, and supplies semi-finished uppers, soles and components. Each type is developed on our own production lines plus a vetted partner-factory network, with OEM, ODM and private-label options.

How is each footwear type made differently?

Every category uses different lasts, tooling, materials and construction — a moulded EVA sandal, a carbon-plate running shoe and a Goodyear-welted work boot share almost nothing beyond a silhouette. Each guide below explains the construction, materials, standards, MOQ and lead times for that specific product type.

What is a typical MOQ across footwear types?

A typical MOQ is around 1,000 pairs per style, with roughly 300–600 pairs per colour, plus a one-time tooling cost for moulded styles. DOING offers low-MOQ sampling to validate a design first and flexible MOQ on selected lines.
